What Does a CNA/HHA Do?

A CNA/HHA assists with activities of daily living (ADLs) for patients and provides basic nursing care, including helping with transfers, bathing, and maintaining personal hygiene. Home care CNAs/HHAs are supervised by a registered nurse.

Here are some ways a CNA/HHA helps a patient:

  • Assistance with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, grooming, etc.)
  • Help with feeding
  • Support with range of motion and medically prescribed home exercise
  • Stand-by assistance with walking and transfers
  • Help with toileting and incontinence
  • Communicating with medical team

Advantages of Becoming Your Loved One’s CNA/HHA

As a family member, nobody understands the daily needs of your loved one better than you do. The “Family-as-CNA/HHA” program is unique to South Carolina Medicaid and allows family members to earn certification to become a caregiver for their loved one, based on medical necessity. It allows an opportunity to earn a viable income as an employee of a home healthcare agency.

  • By becoming your family member’s certified caregiver, you don’t have to worry about lapses in care.
  • With a trusted family member as a CNA/HHA, some financial burden is relieved for the family.
